So I'm finally sitting down. Oh my god, that feels good. Oh, and I'm here with The very handsome Christopher Atkins. We're at the Hollywood show. I'm Dr. Susan Block and hey Christopher. How you doing? I am doing just right
That's good. Yeah. Yeah, you've got it here. It's like it's like a little your own private lagoon. Yeah, I Wish it was I could invite a lot of people over and we could have a nice Well Yeah, well, we'll get we'll get to that
You know, I mean you're you're so famous from blue lagoon blue lagoon. I always think of you that way I mean and here you are Nature boy surfer boy you were a lifeguard, right? I was a sailing instructor actually, but it's all back in New York
New York they do a lot of sailing in New York. Yeah, they did a lot. Well Long Island sound Yep, yep taught little kids how to sail and you look like such a California guy That's what I get all the time surfer California. Yeah all the time, but I'm here been here long enough So I might as well and of course here you are with Brooke Shields. Yeah
Oh my god is so many guys and a lot of girls are jealous of you for this well Not much I can do about that. I'm I guess it's a good thing. Yeah. Yeah, it's good It's in general good as long as they're not carrying weaponry. So
What was she like to work with? Well, she was 14 when we shot the picture and she turned. Yeah, she turned 15 on the island. How old were you? You're a vage, but she wasn't No, not yet. Not yet, but everything's legal offshore. So
Anyway, we were on this deserted island in the middle of the South Pacific and that was a real deal And now the island has a resort on it. That's a very exclusive I think $2,500 a night resort and they play blue lagoon every Sunday And I have yet to go back in 30 some odd years and I'm dying to go back one of these days
I have a lot of friends who have been there and say it's just magical. It's just a wonderful wonderful place And we actually were the the crew Found water on the island. They didn't even have water on the island. They were barging it in back then And what island what was the name? This is an island called Turtle Island in Fiji and I knew you leave a turtle island
Yeah, and I mean it was it was it was quite the experience. We lived in tents for four and a half months and Yeah, it was it was a life experience. It wasn't just making a movie Yeah, and it became more than a movie. It became an iconic film one of those classic films about young love and unspoiled nature. I mean you represent that to so many people. I know I was very lucky in that I think
it was one of those timeless stories that is very Romeo Juliet and Very innocent and dealing with love life and death and and I think it's what makes that story so magical and special and and besides also the fantasy of of being on an island like that and With somebody as beautiful as Brooke, but you know the story holds water. They keep making it over and over
Yeah, and somebody as handsome as Christopher Atkins No, no not at all Grandpa now though. Well, congratulations. Thank you very much. So are you still married the same person? No I haven't I haven't been married in a in a while. I lasted 20 years. That's not too bad
That's very good in Hollywood. Yeah, I mean there was a I was like After after we broke up that it was really hard, you know, I always wanted to be one of those Hopeless romantics and wanted to sit on the rockers at the you know, the old age and the on the porch and enjoy each other You know, but
After a year, I guess I kind of look back and I went whoa, this is awesome. Whoa Free You do that. Do you still work out? I mean You know what I I I do I mostly hike though right now because I haven't I just had back surgery and you know all the
Throwing myself around as a kid in sports and stuff like that kind of caught up to me I think and so I just I got a couple of screws in the shoulder I got a couple of plates in my back and four knee operations and but I'm I'm still good to go Well, you know better an old sex symbol than a dead sex symbol, right? I guess so
I mean, I guess when when you die early, then you get to be a sex symbol your whole life or something like that Or how do you feel about the whole sex symbol thing? Well, you know, I'm a little shy on that one You know, I guess back in the day when when you know, you looked at like that
It was kind of it was kind of fun and exciting and I mean at one point in time There wasn't a place I could go on the entire face of this earth that I wasn't mobbed and hair pulled and and it Was pretty amazing and I think you know for that I guess I'm kind of grateful because you know a lot of people come into this business and they all want to
Get that that brass ring, you know, and and I was lucky enough to get it I you know, they're a downside to being a sex symbol No No, there's there's there's nothing down about it. It makes everything go up. Yeah, absolutely
You've been to Hollywood shows before yes, how many I've been doing it for a good number of years You know on and off for so this is the first year they have an adult wing What do you think about that? I think it's wonderful and the reason why I think it's wonderful is because it It's been around forever. It's not going anywhere
And I think now it to bring be able to bring it out more into the forefront and accept it as the art form that it that it actually is and being able to Let people meet these people and see you know who they are and and I Just makes things much more acceptable
When people get the opportunity to be presented with it rather than it, you know sort of being Behind closed doors and so I think it's a fantastic thing and I think the more that it becomes accepted The the better and the the bigger it will actually be, you know, I mean it it's film It's film and certainly a lot of the people in the adult wing are from the golden age of porn when
It wasn't in a dark. Well, it wasn't a dark room, but with a lot of people and it was shown on the big screen Yeah, well, it was when it was just I guess like the 80s. I mean it was just starting to come out more and more and Be more visible and presentable You know it was like blue lagoon one of the things that was the big issue was male frontal nudity in the film, so
You know rating you're gonna exactly and we were not good We got an R rating and we were not gonna get an R rating because of that But blue lagoon was a very big step back then and now they show it on TV Sure. Sure. Were you ever asked to be in a porn film?
No, but I was asked to direct one Interesting, how did that come about? I don't remember I don't know if it was one of the Larry Flint things back in the day that he wanted Celebrities to try to do things like that. Did you do it? No, but it would have been fun
I just didn't think it would be good for your career Well, that's always unfortunately the stigma. I don't personally think it is. I think it's you know If there was no stigma, what kind of porn film would you direct what what would it would there be a story? What kind of characters? That's a good question
I don't Well, you know what I like I like the romantic and You know the blue lagoon aspect is a really great. What if you did the x-rated version of blue lagoon? I think they did it
Okay. Oh Well, too bad. Well, we should wind up because I think you should do your own x-rated version of blue lagoon And we will populate it with our friends. But anyway, thank you so much, Christopher It's great. We will have no problem with that and you have a great time at the Hollywood. Thank you very much. You too
