Full transcript of Ed Asner Talks About Politics & Sex with Dr Susan Block on The Dr. Susan Block Show:
So, I'm here at the Hollywood Show. This is Dr. Susan Block with Ed Asner. How do you, baby? Oh, I'm so happy to be here with you.
I've been a big fan of yours since Mary Tyler Moore and, of course, Lou Grant. Well, that establishes that you're of a certain age. It does, if these little crow's feet or big ones don't establish that already. But I'm happy to, so happy to be here with you.
And I did meet you at an Emmy's event a few years ago. But now I have a chance to tell you how much I appreciate all the wonderful work you've done and all the great pleasure you've given people like me. Thank you. Thank you.
So, how do you like being at the Hollywood Show and hearing gushing fans like me? Well, I wish they hadn't dropped the bomb because then people would be here now. Unfortunately, we need to fill this place with... Gushing fans. There were a lot more yesterday, but it's Sunday.
Maybe people are having a hard time waking up. Well, I guess they haven't gotten on a church yet. There you go. There you go. Well, speaking of church and morals and stuff, what do you think about the new adult wing to the Hollywood Show?
The new what? Well, there's a wing for the Golden Age of pornography. There's a whole wing out there that features actors from the Golden Age of porn. Really?
You didn't know that? Well, see, I'm here to give you the gossip. I have yet to make my first buck at porn, so maybe it's not too late to start. Well, no, it never is. For you, I would do it. I've always turned them down.
No, I would not have you do anything that you didn't want to do gladly. No, I would. I would gladly do it. Like I said, for you, I've always turned down all these porn directors. Well, we're going to make hay while the sun shines.
Absolutely. I like that attitude. So you're glad to have your compatriots in the X-rated industry. They are part of Hollywood after all. And predate Hollywood.
I can remember the stag films I've seen. I think most of them were silent when I first started seeing stag films. Thank you for that confession. The artwork was great, though.
Great artists. Very great artists. Very great artists. And a lot of the sex industry in general. A friend of mine just passed away, Al Goldstein. I don't know if you knew him. The publisher of Screw.
And he had some amazing artists in his magazine. So I've also been a big fan of your politics. The radical liberal wing. That's what I'd be. I'd be a liberal.
So what do you think of the political situation right now? I think it sucks. Yeah, I think it sucks. I'm waiting to come out of the tunnel we're in.
And I hope we do. You think Obama can get us out? Or you think it takes more than that? Or somebody else? Do you have any favorites for...
Start being more effective than he's been. Seems a little less effective than he was. As often presidents are in their second term. Yeah, yeah.
Well, he's got three more years to practice. Do you think the Tea Party is going to stick around? No. They'll just, you know, they're chameleons. They'll change their color.
And drift into another... another growth. As like warts or... or moles, you know.
They'll wear out their name, the Tea Party. It'll become too much of a joke. But what about, do you have any words of inspiration for the liberal, young people out there
who are kind of depressed about the situation? Yeah, make America what it was written to be. How do we do that? Well, overthrow the existing jackasses
who keep confounding and misinterpreting and debasing the name America and Americans. All right. Thank you very much.
Ed Asner. I think we're going to do that. We're going to get rid of the jackasses. So I hope some, you know, nice fans come on over here to you.
I'm glad you, don't I? You do. You do. You know, since you've got me, I think I'll ask you another few questions
if you don't mind. I'm going to work at getting you. Okay. So you have a philosophy of sex? Of sex?
Yeah, well, I'm a sex therapist, and that's... Relax. That's the first flaw. That's a good philosophy. We are so driven by our erections
that we're afraid it's going to melt when we should just enjoy the strokes. Like it. Love it. Absolutely. And sometimes then the erection just wakes up
on its own. Right. Right. Right. I mean, has sex changed with age much for you? Oh, God, yes.
How's it gotten better? Well, all I have to do is think about it now. Just thinking about it gives me great pleasure. You look like you're having some pleasure right now.
Yeah. And the strokes, I like the strokes. You know, and I think as you get older you maybe feel them more.
Feel more. You know, it's like feeling that goose you bought. Checking it out.
Looking for the weak points. Looking what needs cooking more. You know, that kind of thing. And that sort of thing you learn more with age.
And you've marinated the goose. Yes. Yes. And it's juices. Or in your juices.
Doesn't matter whose juices. As long as you use juice. Yes. As long as you use juice. And we don't mean OJ, okay?
Mm-hmm. But very wise words in politics and sex from Ed Asner. I'm just, just all choked up, I think,
because I've been such a big fan of yours for so long. And I want to give you a kiss. Is that okay? This is Dr. Susan Block with Ed Asner.
Thank you so much. Thank you, Dr. Block. We'll remove those blocks. You can do it, Ed.
Only you can do it. I want to work on it. Yeah, we're going to work on it. We're going to make that movie together.
God willing. There's always a niche market for this sort of thing. Thank you. Here's a candy cane.
Okay, yeah. And if you want a good time, give me a call. Thank you. Thank you.
Keep that. Don't let me take it.
