Persephone Has Risen
The Resurrection of Jesus on Easter Sunday is a cornerstone of Christian faith. Yet long before the Rebirth of the Holy Son returning to His Heavenly Father, there was the Resurrection of the Holy Daughter coming home to Her Holy Mother. In the Garden of Bonoboville, surrounded by spring flora, odd Easter artifacts and whizzing cars, Dr. Susan Block tells the tale of the Greek Goddess Persephone (Proserpina to the Romans) rising up from the Bowels of Hades to rejoin Her Earth Mama Demeter (Ceres) who is so ecstatic to embrace the resurrected Fruit of Her Loins that She showers the world in Spring.

Spring has sprung. The grass has risen. Do you know where the party is? Easter is coming. The resurrection. That's what spring is all about, the rebirth of eco-sexual, burgeoning, sexy earth. So how did that become Jesus coming back to life?
Well, that is the most famous resurrection. That's right, brothers and sisters, we celebrate Easter in the spring. Jesus sharing his body and his blood in a very eco-sexual way. The spirit of spring. But did it start with that? Not exactly. To the Romans. The ancient classicists called this the time of
primavera. And it is the idea of the rebirth of earth that instead of like a son joining his holy father, it's a daughter joining her holy mother. It's Persephone who of course was abducted by Hades or Pluto and taken down to the underworld where her poor mother, Demeter, the goddess of the earth, just wept and left the earth in winter just completely abandoned when it had always been
spring. And yeah, there's a story about you know how she ate these six pomegranate seeds and this is why we spend six months in winter going into fall and then the other six months in spring just kind of flowing into summer. What has become a story of the holy father and son really started out as the holy mother and dog. I'm Dr. Susan Goddard.
